I heard of a company based in San Francisco called Imperfect Foods. The basic concept of it is to stop food waste. Grocery stores reject food that have small imperfections. Also companies rebrand their merchandise and then the old labeled food sits in warehouses, never to be sold. The last reason is a surplus of fruit or vegetables that are going to be thrown out at the grocery store level because they can’t sell it all in time before it goes bad. Hence the name Imperfect Foods.
I thought why not give it a try. I logged on at www.imperfectfoods.com then I selected my pre-selected box options (which you can change the week of delivery). I choose the dairy and meat and fish packages. They also have a snack pack and grains pack. I choose dairy and meat since I have a ton of snacks and grains to get through already. I can change this later if I want to add it. Just like shopping at an online grocery store you have a cart that shows your pre-selected items. You can add numbers of items or reduce them or delete them. My pre-selected items came to $35.
I went in and made some changes based on what I wanted to eat that week. I took out peaches and added strawberries. I took out ground beef and added chicken. I have a recipe for pumpkin bread so I added a jar of ground pumpkin pie spice. When all was said and done, I received organic limes and mint, 1 pound of yellow onions, carrots, strawberries, and potatoes, a bunch of green onions, 2 shallots, garlic and lemons, 4 count artisan lettuce blend, pumpkin pie spice, 3 pound bag of unbleached flour, 14 oz of chicken breasts, a BelGioioso parmesan cheese wedge(my favorite), and a quart of half and half. All of this for $40 including the delivery fee! There is no way I could get all this at the grocery store for this reduced price!
After receiving my box, I made a superb meal of potato gnocchi with marinara sauce and Italian spiced chicken on top. Inspired from a Hello Fresh meal I had made months before. I was also able to share the shallots and onions with friends since I had too many to go through and I did not want to waste them.
The second box I received the following week from Imperfect Foods was smaller but had more high priced items compared to my first box. I adjusted my cart items that they choose for me and instead I got a gallon of organic milk, 2 limes, mint, chicken breasts, and sausages. I plan to make a meal with the shallots, onion and chicken breasts tonight.
